Aloha!

We feel we’ve planned this trip quite well as far as weather goes… We’ve managed to do activities that don’t require really sunny days on days where there were clouds and a chance of rain, and we’ve had sun on days when we’ve needed it.  That’s not always easy to plan when you have to put reservations in for activities well in advance, so we’ve been quite proud of ourselves. (smile)

Having said that, however, yesterday was a bit of an exception.  We managed to get about three hours of great sun in at Waimea Bay (the ONE place on this whole island I REALLY wanted to go to!) before the clouds rolled in.  Our plan had been to go to Waimea until we were beached out, then go to Haleiwa for lunch and shopping, then continue on to a few other towns on the North Shore for more shopping and dinner.  By the time we made it to Haleiwa, it was pouring rain – our FIRST real rainstorm!  We still managed to get a shave ice with ice cream at Matsumoto’s General Store, however.  Some things just have to take precedence over weather!

Being winter here, the surf is really high!  In fact, the lifeguards at the beach announced that no one should get into the water unless they were very expert swimmers and knew the beach well.  I only ventured in up to my waist, which really made me sad.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE swimming at Waimea Bay!  To me, it is one of my most favorite beaches in the world (literally).  As the day went on, the waves got bigger and bigger.  It was a surfer’s paradise.  We had fun just watching the waves and surfers.

By the time we finished our lunch in Haleiwa, it was getting colder, and it was still raining a bit, so we gave up on the idea of going any further and turned around and went back to our condo. It was about sunset, anyway.  It was probably a good thing because I had to totally reorganize my suitcases to put warm clothes on top again and cool clothes on the bottom.  Also, Delta charges $75 for baggage 51-70 pounds.  Still having a few things left out for today, my one bag was 51.2 pounds, and my other was 64 pounds.  I’ll have to regroup a bit before we leave here.

We’re planning on going over to Turtle Bay for one last attempt at sunbathing for about 1 ½ hours.  Then, we’ll come back, shower, check out of the condo, and head on down around the outside of the island on the southeast to do some sightseeing.  We check out at 1:00 but Carol’s flight isn’t until 10:00 PM, and mine is at 11:10 PM, so we’ve got a bit of time to kill.  The hard part will be not being able to get in the water again.  I would have enjoyed snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, which we will see today.  It’s a beautiful bay with all kinds of tropical fish.  Oh well, I guess you can’t do everything.  Besides, I’ve done it many times before.

Well, it’s off to the beach, Carol’s Hukilau Café for lunch, and a new day.  Hopefully, our flights will be smooth, on time, and safe as well.  See you in Oakland, California…
